- After the Buffalo Sabres fired both head coaches Ron Rolston (who had followed the fired Lindy Ruff on
- February 20, 2013) and general manager Darcy Regier, Nolan was named interim head coach on November 13, 2013. (whose first move as GM had been to oust Nolan as Sabres head coach in 1997). Nolan was hired by Pat LaFontaine, who also joined the team as president of hockey operations but left three months later.
- In 1988, Nolan took over as the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds’ head coach as a midseason replacement and held the position through the end of the 1994 campaign. In 1993, Nolan led the Greyhounds to the Canadian national junior championship and three consecutive berths in the Memorial Cup competition.
